What I Instinctively Reach For, Now That I Can No Longer Wear Chrome Turquoise Eyeshadow
The neutral of all neutrals
Just grab and go, I tell myself, just grab and go.
If there were no time to lose, so that I could catch that flight in time, because we’d gone all the way to the airport and then had to turn back because we forgot my driver’s license. And now we’ve got to drive all the way back to said airport again, but this time I had 20 seconds to also grab makeup that I’d forgotten to pack.
This would be the eyeshadow palette I would reach out for without thinking. And as you can tell, not only has it been used, but you can also guess which ones my favourite shades are.
Time and again, I have, without thinking, defaulted to the Clio Shade and Shadow palette in Shadow Gallery. Be it for a summer wedding in the French countryside, or just to look “not bare” for my driving class, this palette has everything I ever need.
My only criteria for an eyeshadow palette are that it’s got to be budget friendly, has neutral shades that I can wear for any and every occasion, is pigmented and blends well. This palette fits all that and more.
It has a good mix of matte and shimmer shades, and it also has fine glitter shades for when I feel like dressing up a little more. If I ever find myself without a contour stick or powder, the 2 east-Asian-nude-brown shades (bottom row, middle 2 shades) would suffice. Though I’ve not had to resort to that yet, it’s good to know I have this option as Plan C. Highlighter for my nose bridge? Top left shade.
I hardly remember eyeshadow shades by their names anymore. It’s more of where I can find them in the palette. And for almost every time I’ve used this palette, I’ve worn that last shade in the middle row. “For depth.”
A few weeks ago, like clockwork every few months, I found myself craving new makeup. I wanted more eyeshadow palettes, more product to play with. How can it be that I don’t need any other palette? Is it enough to just have one?
Being almost 40, can I still wear chrome turquoise eyeshadow and cat eyeliner without drawing stares? More fittingly, on what occasion could I even wear turquoise eyeshadow to? Definitely not to any meet-the-parents session, unless I’m fine with risking my children’s reputation in school.
So maybe just neutral browns will do. But Charlotte Tilbury’s too pink, Huda’s too warm, and 3CE’s too coral. I’m better than Maybelline (not pigmented and blendable enough for me these days) and I’m now willing to splurge for the right product. I’m just in a phase of life where I’d rather spend $40 on something that would make me happy using it, instead of $15 for something just so I can save some money.
But it’s been a while and I still have not yet found a dupe that suits my cool toned skin.
So for the moment (as has been the case for the past 1-2 years), if anyone asks me what neutral eyeshadow palettes I would recommend, as long as the shade of their skin looks similar to mine, I would recommend this palette in a heartbeat.
Tell me, what’s your favourite product of the moment?
